Global Combat System Alignment – Schill Engineers Deliver Precision Worldwide

At Schill, combat system alignment is a truly global profession. With customers in more than 30 countries, our engineers travel the world to deliver advanced alignment systems, on-site services, and specialist expertise. Whether it’s the icy decks of a northern shipyard or the heat of a Southeast Asian naval base, the mission is always the same: Achieve absolute precision.

One recent example comes from Malaysia, where our team was tasked with verifying the alignment of missile launchers and ramps aboard a naval vessel. Schill’s unique capability lies in aligning systems to extreme accuracy, even while a ship is afloat and in motion.

Accuracy is everything
As alignment engineer Mattias Areskog explains:
“Everyone knows it’s difficult, nearly impossible, and completely useless to use a spirit level to mount a shelf or a TV on a moving boat. Now imagine the complexity of aligning a combat system, where the required accuracies and tolerances are on a completely different level.”

From Specification to Verified Combat System Alignment

Every Schill assignment begins with the production of a detailed alignment specification. A document defining exactly what will be measured, how it will be measured, and the required tolerances. This specification is the foundation for both preparation and execution, ensuring all stakeholders have the same expectations.

Once the work is complete, the process concludes with a comprehensive report. Schill’s software automatically generates precise measurement data reports, but most customers also request a combined method and results report. This additional documentation outlines the measurement procedure, adaptations made, and final alignment results — providing both transparency and traceability.

Prepared for the Unexpected

In Malaysia, the customer’s verification requirements didn’t match the standard alignment procedure. To ensure the missile launchers were measured exactly as requested, the team invested significant preparation time before departure, carefully adapting both procedure and methodology to suit the task and the requirements. This groundwork meant the engineers could execute the measurements efficiently once on site, despite the complexity of the systems and the conditions at sea.

Experience That Grows With Every Mission

The result was the same as always: precise measurements, verified alignment, and a satisfied customer — confident that their systems were ready for operational use.

Next time we measure a similar system, we’ll know exactly how to proceed. Even though few systems are truly alike, we now have another tool in our toolbox — ready to be put to use wherever in the world precision is needed.

From Malaysia to the Mediterranean, from the Arctic to the Indian Ocean, Schill’s alignment engineers combine advanced technology, proven methodology, and hands-on ingenuity to deliver combat system alignment anywhere in the world, no matter how much the deck might be moving beneath their feet.
